I just want to start this post off by saying that I love and respect everyones interests and choices, and my purpose here is not to try and sound snobby or out of place. But sometimes, whether through telepathic transmission or osmosis, a girl just ends up falling in love with the different and the weird and this formed bond cannot be broken. I would know. I spent nearly all of my time in first year university with headphones on, Rolling Stones music blaring, trying to drown out the sounds of Taylor Swifts "Red" album. Not that I dislike Taylor Swift's records, but they just don't satisfy my musical needs like hearing Mick roar "doing heroin with the president." Sometimes, no matter how wonderful your friends are, it seems that you have no one in your life who can relate to your excitement and obsession involving certain alternative interests. And while yeah sure you can go on Tumblr or any other social networking site and reblog or share gifs and edits of your favourite things (whether it be music related, tv and or movie related, book related), there's still something so satisfying about being able to dance to your favourite song with your best friend who loves it just as much as you do. This past February I was sitting all alone at a Lady Gaga concert next to a gay couple thinking how much better it would be if at least one of my friends were there to share the experience. But that's when it dawned on me: I didn't need to be the lame odd-ball, and that the only person pushing me into the corner was myself. No matter what interest you may take, there's always going to be a community of people who love what you love, even if they're all in their late 50's. But how do you reach out to them? With the complete lack of social networking and communication available to us in 2013 it must be pretty difficult to message someone via the internet and say "Hey! Let's be friends!" All sarcasm aside, there's no harm in making new friends who share the same love of the same things as you do through the internet! Although the www can be a deceptive place, if you are smart and use your best discretion theres little chance of you falling victim to a trap. So go ahead and message that girl with the Vampire Weekend appreciation blog who lives in the same city as you and try to actively form a new friendship and ban together. Will it be weird at first? Maybe. Will it be worth it when you finally have a new friend who loves the same things as you? Definitely. Find your people and never feel ashamed of the things that make your heart skip a beat.
xx
